Introduction

If you renew your U.S. passport, the DS-82 form is a PDF document you can complete online and print out. Both adults and minors use the DS-82 application to renew their passports. It includes details about the person requesting the renewal and allows them to submit supporting documents such as proof of citizenship and identity.

DS-82 Plus Supporting Documents

You should also include supporting documentation proving you are eligible for passport renewal. For example, if you have been incarcerated in jail or prison for more than one year since the issuance of your last passport, include a certified copy of your criminal record from the jurisdiction where you were incarcerated.

If you’ve had a legal name change (e.g., through marriage), provide evidence that supports this change, such as:

  • An adoption decree showing both spouses’ names; or
  • A court order changing one spouse’s last name to match another spouse’s last name

Use the DS-82 application, a PDF form you can fill in online.

To complete the DS-82 application, you can fill in the form online or print it out and fill it in by hand. The DS-82 is a PDF form that requires Adobe Acrobat Reader (the same software used by many other government agencies) to open. You can download that program for free from [official passport website](https://www.usps.com/international/passport-forms/ds-82a-renewal_application).

Once you have downloaded and installed Adobe Acrobat Reader, open up your web browser on any device connected to the internet and click “Download Form” at the bottom of this page to start filling out your application–it’ll take just a few minutes!

You must submit the renewal application with your current passport and a new photo.

To complete the DS-82 form, you must submit the renewal application with your current passport and a new photo. The old passport should be in good condition and have at least six months of validity. The new photograph must meet the requirements listed above for new passports: It must be in color with a plain white background. If you are unable to get a copy from someone else’s ID photo or if you do not have an ID photo on file with us (for example, if this is your first passport), see “How do I get an appointment for an agency interview?” below for instructions on how to obtain one before submitting your DS-82 form so we can issue your new U.S. passport card or book immediately after receiving both documents back from you at our office.*

A Passport Renewal is easier than you think!

You’ve heard all the horror stories about how difficult it is to renew a passport. It’s not true! It’s easier than you think and in some cases, cheaper.

Passport renewal is faster than getting a new passport because you don’t have to wait for your picture or signature to be taken at an application center (unless you want both). Once you submit everything online, it usually takes about four weeks for USPS mail to deliver your renewed document back into your hands–and sometimes even less time if you choose expedited delivery options such as overnight shipping or two-day air delivery at checkout.

Next up: cost savings! While the cost of having both parents’ signatures on file with their own passports can be expensive ($10 per person), there are ways around this expense if only one parent has their own travel document in good standing with no outstanding fees owed by either party (i.e., any outstanding fines must be paid off before applying). You’ll also save money by using our online system rather than going through traditional channels like postal mail or faxing documents through FedEx/UPS/DHL etc., which costs extra money every time something gets sent out from one location to another location across town–or across oceans!
