Step 1
Confirm you meet the urgency window
You need international travel within 14 days, or 28 days when a foreign visa is required. Domestic plans and expiring documents do not qualify.
Step 2
Call for an appointment
Appointments at regional agencies are released continuously — call the National Passport Information Center and be flexible about which agency and time you take.
Step 3
Bring proof of travel
A flight itinerary, booking confirmation, or a letter from your employer showing the departure date within the window.
Step 4
Bring the complete application
Everything a normal application needs: form, citizenship proof, ID, photocopies, a photo, and payment — plus your expedite fee.
Step 5
Plan for the return trip
Most agencies hand you the passport the same day or the next. Budget for parking, security screening, and a wait even with an appointment.
