Line up the guides
Put the top of the head on the upper line and the bottom of the chin on the lower line. Eyes should sit between the dashed lines.
Only lightens an already plain, evenly lit background. Heavy editing can get a photo rejected — leave this off if you are unsure.

What the State Department requires
- 2 x 2 inches, with your head between 1 and 1 3/8 inches from chin to crown.
- Taken within the last 6 months and showing your current appearance.
- Plain white or off-white background with no shadows, patterns, or other people.
- Neutral expression or a natural smile, with both eyes open and facing the camera.
- No glasses. No hats or head coverings unless worn daily for religious reasons.
- Everyday clothing — no uniforms, camouflage, or anything resembling one.
- In color, printed on matte or glossy photo paper, with no digital filters or retouching.
Setting up at home in five minutes
- 1Stand about two feet from a plain white wall, with another three feet between you and the camera.
- 2Face a window so daylight hits you evenly from the front. Turn off overhead lights that cast shadows.
- 3Have someone else hold the camera at eye level — selfies distort the face and are commonly rejected.
- 4Look straight at the lens, keep a neutral expression, and hold your shoulders square.
- 5Take several shots, then pick the one with no shadow on the wall behind you.
Printing the sheet
Download the 4x6 inch sheet and order it as a single standard photo print at any pharmacy, warehouse club, or online print service — usually well under a dollar. Print on photo paper, never plain office paper, then cut along the guides. Home inkjet paper is not accepted.
