Short answer
Many countries require your passport to remain valid for at least six months beyond your arrival or departure date, and some require two completely blank visa pages. Airlines enforce these rules at check-in, so renew when you are within nine months of expiring rather than waiting for the printed date.
When to renew
- Nine months before expiration if you travel internationally at all.
- Immediately if you have a trip booked and the book expires within six months of your return.
- Before applying for any long-stay visa — consulates apply their own validity minimums.
- As soon as pages run low, since visas and stamps consume pages fast.
What counts as a blank page
Only pages headed for visas count. Pages marked 'amendments and endorsements' at the back of the book are not visa pages, and a page with a single stamp in the corner is no longer blank for countries that require full-page visas.
Damaged books fail the validity test too
Normal wear is fine. Water damage, a detached cover, a torn or unreadable data page, or anything that makes the book look tampered with means it is considered damaged and must be replaced in person, not renewed by mail.
