Status is tracked only by the U.S. Department of State. Use their official status tool with your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Allow about two weeks after applying before a status appears.

What each status means
Not Available
The system has not matched your application yet. It usually takes about two weeks after you apply for a status to appear — longer if you mailed a renewal.
In Process
Your application has been received and is being reviewed. Most of the wait happens in this status; no action is needed from you unless you are contacted.
Approved
Your passport has been printed or is about to ship. Your old passport (if you sent one) is returned separately, often a few days apart.
Action Required / Suspended
Something is missing — a photo that does not meet the rules, a citizenship document, or a signature. Watch for a letter or email and reply quickly; the clock restarts once they receive what they need.
If you are delayed
- 1. Compare against current processing times. Most "stuck" applications are still inside the published window. See processing times by route.
- 2. Answer any letter immediately. A suspended application waits on you. Photos are the most common reason — make a compliant 2x2 in photo free or find a Staples that prints them.
- 3. Travelling within 14 days? Request an urgent appointment at a regional passport agency, or compare registered courier services.
- 4. Overseas? Contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
