U.S. citizens traveling to Covington, VA on a route entirely within the United States do not need a passport. For domestic flights, adults 18 and older need identification accepted by TSA. A REAL ID-compliant license, passport book or passport card are among the options.
REAL ID enforcement began May 7, 2025. A noncompliant state license is not enough on its own; use another TSA-accepted ID. Domestic-flight ID rules are federal, not a separate passport requirement imposed by Virginia.
REAL ID and passport optionsTSA does not require identification for children under 18 on domestic flights. Check the airline’s rules, especially for unaccompanied minors. A child traveling alone needs acceptable ID to receive TSA PreCheck screening.
Child passports for international tripsCrossing between U.S. states is not an international border crossing. Drivers should check state licensing and rental requirements. Entering the U.S. from another country has separate passport, visa or ESTA rules; domestic-flight ID does not establish permission to enter or stay.
Official guidance for visitors to the U.S.If your itinerary includes a foreign country, international entry and transit requirements also apply. A passport card cannot be used for international air travel.

For a first passport or a child’s passport, check the official DS-11 requirements before choosing a facility. Compare each office’s passport schedule—not just its general opening hours—and use its official booking or location link to confirm acceptance services.
A photo-service flag in a listing does not guarantee photos at your appointment time. Confirm photo availability, required documents and accepted payment methods directly. Eligible adult renewals may not need an office visit; check renewal options first.
For urgent travel, review regional passport agency options rather than assuming a local acceptance office can issue a passport immediately. Official application requirements explain what to bring.
