Apply for Your First Adult Passport
Follow these steps to apply for your first U.S. passport. All first-time adult applicants must apply in person.
You must apply in person if ANY of these are true:
- This is your first U.S. passport
- Your previous passport was issued when you were under 16
- Your previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
- Your previous passport was issued more than 15 years ago
You'll Need:
Proof of Citizenship (One of):
- Original birth certificate
- Naturalization certificate
- Certificate of citizenship
- Consular report of birth abroad
Government-Issued Photo ID:
- Valid driver's license
- Current government ID
- Current military ID
- Naturalization certificate
Your passport photo must meet these requirements:
- 2x2 inches in size
- Taken within the last 6 months
- White or off-white background
- Full face, front view
