Learn about important steps to take after receiving your new U.S. passport.
Where Are My Documents?
After receiving your passport, your supporting documents will arrive in a separate mailing:
- Passport Book: Expect supporting documents within four weeks
- Passport Card: Documents arrive separately via First Class Mail
- Both Book and Card: You may receive three separate mailings
Contact passport services if you haven't received your documents after four weeks.
Sign Your Passport
Follow these important signing instructions:
For Adults
Sign your full name in blue or black ink inside your passport book.
For Children Under 16
- • Parent prints child's full name
- • Parent signs their own name
- • Notes relation (mother/father/guardian)
Six-Month Validity Rule
Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your trip dates.
- Adult Passports (16+): Valid for 10 years
- Child Passports (Under 16): Valid for 5 years
Existing Visas in Old Passport
If you have a valid visa in your old passport:
- You cannot use your old passport for travel
- Contact the issuing embassy/consulate about visa validity
Trusted Traveler Programs
Update your information if you're enrolled in programs like Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI:
- Update your new passport number
- Update issue and expiration dates
- Visit enrollment center for name/gender changes
